“Rodeo Rope”

Remnants of the Wild West remain in remote sections of the country, and artifacts of fiber often document this culture.

The cowboy who was selling ropes, saddles and tack at a flea market was astounded that I liked the rodeo ropes–a sturdy braid of hemp with a loop on one end for the rider’s hand. These worn ropes survive after many nights on “the circuit.” Thinking I was crazy, the cowboy let me have 3 ropes for $10.00! Embellished with baling twine, they are a tribute to the rough and ready cowboys of the West.
